Beauty and Ugliness

Notions of beauty
And ugliness
Are feral
Animal
Impulses and impressions
From some deep forgotten place
An unconscious division
Between
Desires and fears

Art exists
To show both sides
Unappologetically
Scaling ethereal heights
Dredging unknown depths
Uncovering that place
Where beauty and ugliness
Become one

For dVerse Open Link Night #102…The picture is a painting I entered in a local art show in 2011. ย I very nearly didn’t enter it at all because I was afraid it was “too ugly”. ย In the end I reminded myself that I should not apologize for my artwork, but let it speak for itself.

  1. Art exists
    To show both sides
Unappologetically… i totally agree… and that’s the important thing about art, the honesty
def. never apologize for your artwork.. it is what it is and it is like this for a reason.. i think it’s very cool david….

  2. nice…love that second stanza…in why art exists…and the beauty and ugliness becoming one…i think there is real art in understanding the need for both…and the beauty in both

  3. David, I like the painting, and true beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. What one deems ugly, another deems beautiful. Nice write. Thanks for commenting on my poem, it is greatly appreciated.
